Easy Flatbread (for the beginner)
Have you wanted to try making flatbread but just didn’t know how or thought it was too difficult to accomplish? I’ve put together an easy recipe where the whole process takes an hour and you won’t even need to turn on your oven!
ingredients:
2 cups of flour (all purpose or whole wheat)
1 tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 and 1/2 tsp active dry yeast
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup of warm water
Combine the flour, baking powder and salt in a mixing bowl. In a smaller bowl, combine the yeast and warm water. Stir the yeast until it has fully dissolved in the water. Add the yeast to the flour mixture. Add olive oil . Fold in the ingredients with a spatula and flat spoon until the dough has become a bit sticky. Place the dough onto a parchment paper lined surface (cookie sheet or cutting board). Knead the dough for about 45 seconds in preparation for the dough to rise. Form the dough into a ball and cover with a larger mixing bowl. Let sit for about 30 minutes. The dough will rise a bit but not as much as a standard bread recipe which usually doubles in size.
After the 30 minutes is up, separate the dough into eight balls of equal size. You’ll flatten out each ball with the palm of your hand and add them to a nonstick frying pan over medium heat on the stovetop. Using a spatula works best to flip the dough, heating each side for about 3-4 minutes. Each side of the bread should turn a golden brown. Complete the same process for the rest. Enjoy the flatbread by itself, with butter, dip in hummus or guacamole, or even make a sandwich.
